11.3 Elements and Element Addresses
11.3.1 Elements
Elements are the locations in the autoloader that can accept a cartridge. The autoloader includes
three types of elements:
n
Medium transport element.
The cartridge loader and carousel make up the medium transport
element. The carousel positi ons the specified cartridge in front of the tape drive and the cartridge
loader moves the cartridge between the tape drive and the storage slot.
n
Storage elements
. The eight cartridge slots in the autoloader are storage elements.
n
Data transfer element.
The tape drive is a data transfer element that reads and writes data as
requested by the host.
The autoloader maintains current information about each element in its cartridge inventory, which is
stored in memory.
11.3.2 Element Addresses
Each of the elements in the autoloader requires an address so it can be identified by SCSI commands.
The figure beneath shows the default address assigned to each element in the autoloader.
In addition to element addresses, each of the cartridge slots is assigned an element index. The
element indexes are identical to the default element addresses. Unlike the element addresses, the
element indexes are permanently coded in the autoloader's firmware and cannot be changed.
The operator panel LCD displays the element indexes, not the element addresses for the cartridge
slots. The slot numbers are displayed in hexadecimal format (1h through Ah).
You can use the MODE SELECT command to change the address of each element in the autoloader.
