Used in this Manual
Private IP address
An IP address assigned to a host within the company’s
network.
Public IP address
A unique IP address assigned by the network
administrator, which is mapped to the Sentinel Pro's
internal IP address. A public IP address can be accessed
and used worldwide.
NAT
(Network Address
Translation)
Mapping a private IP address to a public IP address (and
vice versa) on a one-to-one basis.
NAT overload
Dynamic NAT that maps multiple private addresses to a
single public address by using different ports.
DMZ (DeMilitarized
Zone)
A computer or small network area
that sits between a
trusted internal
network, such as a corporate private
LAN, and an untrusted external network, such as the
public Internet. Typically, the DMZ contains devices
accessible to Internet traffic, such as Web (HTTP )
servers, FTP servers, and DNS servers.
The DMZ term comes from military use, meaning a buffer
area between two enemies.
Firewall
A security system consisting of a combination of hardware
and software that limits the exposure of a computer or
computer network (or trusted internal network) to attack
from crackers; commonly used on local area networks
(LAN) that are connected to the internet (WAN).
