Maintenance
The recommended maintenance schedule for the ATS-6511 is outlined in Table 5-1. Although
this schedule is sufficient for most applications, it may be necessary to increase the number of
scheduled maintenance events for extremely dusty or dirty environments. Contact Symmetricom
if there are questions about the scheduled maintenance cycle.
A minimal amount of maintenance is required for the ATS-6511. It is designed to operate
continuously over long periods of time with little to no interaction. The primary factor in
maintaining a working unit is to verify that it remains dust free and the fiber connectors and
cables are in good condition. The following maintenance schedule is applicable.

5.1 Internal Inspection
The internal inspection of the ATS-6511 is necessary to ensure that all components are relatively
free of dust and particles that may cause electronic components to fail. The following
instructions outline the required steps in performing an internal inspection of the ATS-6511.
1.
Shut the system down.
2.
Remove the top of the ATS-6511.
3.
Visually inspect the various components and make sure that an excessive amount of
dust is not present. Excessive dust can be removed by using compressed air or vacuum
cleaner to clean the electrical components of any accumulated dust.
4.
Use a vacuum cleaner to clean the fan filter of any accumulated dust.
5.
Re-install the cover on the ATS-6511.
6.
Restart the system.
5.2 Fiber Cable Inspection
The fiber cables are a common source of system locking failure because they are fragile and can
be inadvertently damaged by pinching or bending too tightly. The following process outlines the
steps required in performing an inspection of the fiber cables.
1.
Follow the fiber cable from the rear of the ATS-6511 as far as possible away from the
unit. Look for any severe bends in the cable or damage to the shielding of the cable.
2.
Remove any severe bends in the cable and replace any damaged cables.
1
In extreme operating environments it may be necessary to clean the fan filter more frequently.
2
Internal inspections are only required if the fan filter is extremely dirty.
