Proper care and maintenance preserves the value of your investment.
This chapter explains how to keep your boat looking like new as the
years go by.
Use cleaning agents sparingly. Never discharge cleaning solutions into
the waterways. Do not use products containing phosphates, chlorine,
solvents, or nonbiodegradable or petroleum based products.
FIBERGLASS AND GELCOAT
All Seaswirl boats are constructed of fiberglass. We build the hull, inner
liner, and deck separately and later assemble them to construct your
boat. These parts are built in layers of fiberglass, woven and non-
woven, which are bonded with polyester resin. The outer gelcoat is
highly resistant to scratches that occur during normal boat use.
Routine, periodic cleaning is the only practical way to keep the boat’s
surface looking shiny and new. Keeping your boat in “showroom” con-
dition means greater personal satisfaction and higher resale value.
Exposure of gelcoat to sunlight, water, dust, and chemicals in the air
may cause the surface to show a variety of changes, including chalking
(fine, powdery whiteness on the surface), fading, yellowing, or a dulled
finish. These changes show more rapidly on darker colored surfaces
because they absorb more of the sun’s rays (ultraviolet and infrared).
Maintenance
The deck and hull can be easily cleaned with a mild detergent and
water to keep dirt from scratching and dulling the finish. If the deck
and hull have oxidized (appearing as a light white milky film), you may

Fire Hazard!
Spontaneous combustion can ignite rags wetted with
acetone, cleaning fluids, fuel, or other solvents. Never store wetted
rags on board. Dispose of them properly on shore.
Slippery Surface!
Smooth and textured gelcoat surfaces can be
very slippery when wet or covered with soap suds. Wear suitable
deck or boat shoes to prevent falls.
