GALVANIC CORROSION
A common problem for boat owners is the corrosion of metal parts,
especially those submerged in salt water. Electric currents speed up
corrosion. Stray electricity can come from a variety of sources includ-
ing poorly insulated DC-powered equipment on boats moored nearby
or shore power stations supplying AC current.
Zinc anodes have been installed to combat corrosion on underwater
metal parts. These anodes corrode before any other submerged metal
parts. Consult your dealer for their exact location. As part of a routine
maintenance program, anodes must be checked periodically and
replaced when necessary. See Chapter 10. The warranty does not cover
damage resulting from electrolytic corrosion.
Corrosion attacks less noble metals before more noble metals. Zinc is
the least noble metal. Examples of more noble metals are steel, lead,
tin, and bronze. When adding or replacing hull fittings, use metals that
are close to each other in the galvanic series of metals. Check with
your Seaswirl dealer about proper selection and installation. The best
way to avoid corrosion is to use genuine Seaswirl replacement parts.
A Comment from Seaswirl:
Do not paint zinc anodes. It destroys
their ability to resist the corrosion of other underwater metal parts.
GROUND FAULT INTERRUPTER OUTLET
The ground-fault interrupter outlet protects against currents which can
be dangerous even though they do not overload the circuit breakers.
This outlet, which has a test and reset switch in the middle of the face-
plate, provides ground fault protection to cabin outlets. In case of a
fault, a safety switch trips in the outlet and interrupts the circuit. This
protects the person who is operating the electrical equipment from
serious electric shock or loss of life. The outlet may not eliminate the
feeling of an electric shock, but it does open the circuit quickly enough
to prevent injury to a person of normal health.
When the outlet’s circuit breaker is tripped, you must push the RESET
button. Check this outlet periodically by pushing the TEST button.
Pushing the TEST button cuts power to some 110 volt outlets.
