SP 81

Removing and Installing 

the Rakes

Removing

:

Use a suitable tool to remove the 
chain connector as follows:
Pry off the spring clip (

1

), remove 

the tie strap (

2

)

 

and pull out the 

chain connector (

3

).

:

Loosen the locknuts (

4

), unscrew 

them from the pivot pin (

5

) and take 

off the washers (

6

).

:

Pull out the pivot pin (

5

).

:

Remove the rake.

:

Clean the chain connectors and the 
forkhead.

:

Check the condition of the O-rings 
and replace them if there are any 
signs of damage.

:

Squeeze the tube of STIHL SP 
bearing grease to obtain a short 
length of grease.

:

Coat each pin with bearing grease.

Installing

:

Assemble and install in the reverse 
sequence.

Checking Rake Clearance

:

Close the rakes and set them to 
their closest point – the forkhead 
should be at the bottom of its stroke.

:

Grip the gullets of the inner tines 
and gently squeeze the rakes 
together.

:

Measure the distance (

a

) between 

the tips of the tines – do not bend 
the tines in this process.
