7.0 Wind Monitor
Not all SmartScanNG² detectors incorporate a wind monitor subsystem. If your
SmartScanNG² system does not, skip ahead to section 8.0. The wind monitor subsystem
consists of an RM Young Wind Monitor and a 2300-220 Wind Monitor Interface module.
7.1 RM Young Wind Monitor
The wind monitor features an optically encoded direction transducer and serial data output
capability. The wind speed sensor is a four-blade helicoid propeller that turns a multipole
magnet. Propeller rotation induces a variable frequency signal in a stationary coil. The wind
direction sensor is a durable molded vane. An optical encoder measures vane angle. The
encoder is an absolute type, so direction output remains accurate even if power is interrupted.
Raw transducer signals are processed by onboard electronics. A variety of serial protocols or
a conventional calibrated voltage output may be selected with simple internal jumpers. The
instrument mounts on a standard 1-inch pipe.
7.2 2300-220 Wind Monitor Interface
The Wind Monitor Interface offers a convenient means to connect the RM Young Wind Monitor
to the SmartScanNG or NG² Defect Detector System. The unit provides the following.
Multi-stage surge protection for power supply and RS-485 with 3KV power supply
isolation.
9VDC to 30VDC input voltage expands the operating range of the Wind Monitor.
Additional 12-Volt power terminals can supply applications such as a High/Wide
detector.
Rugged compact design for easy installation and maintenance.
A Dsub-9 female connector that connects with a straight-through cable to the defect
detector's RS-485 port and the wiring terminals are labeled to match the terminals of
the RM Young Wind Monitor for ease of installation.
A grounding strap provides a path to ground for surge currents and to bleed off static
electricity from the wind monitor.
A green status LED indicates the +12V power supply output is present.
