How to power on the system

troubleshooting if the server does not boot-up correctly.
• A P/S2 keyboard must be connected before powering on.
• Never move the system when system power is on,
movement can cause disk drive failure. Always
power off the system before moving it.
• Before you power on the system, make sure that the
top lids are in place.

• The system may take 30 seconds to two minutes
before information is displayed on the system

How to ‘ping’ a computer
‘Pinging’ a computer is a way to check and see if a
computer is on the network. Pings send a network request
to a computer asking it to respond (ICMP
ECHO_REQUEST).
When you ‘ping’ a computer, you need to know its name
or its IP address. Using the IP address is better than using
the name, as it eliminates the need to look up the name.
• To ping a computer from a UNIX machine, use the
command:
ping <IP address>
• To ping a computer from a Macintosh, use the program:
macping
.
• To ping a computer from a Windows/PC machine, use
the MSDOS prompt and type the command:
ping <IP address>
Interpreting the results
A successful ‘ping’ consists of receiving back a copy of a
short transmitted test message. The reply will display ‘ping
statistics’ (number of packets sent and received and the
time taken, in ms, to receive back those packets, as shown
below.
