POST errors
The Power On Self Test (POST) diagnostics are controlled
by the server’s BIOS settings, which should not be altered.
Errors encountered while performing the POST are
displayed in one of three ways:
• POST on-screen messages
• POST audible ‘beep’ codes
• POST diagnostic LEDs
POST on-screen messages
During power-on of the server, POST diagnostics are
performed and on-screen messages are displayed showing
the progress of this process and any errors encountered. A
monitor, keyboard and mouse must be connected to the
unit before power-up in order to view, and respond to, the
boot-up messages.
The error messages or codes are of three types:
• Warning – a message is displayed on the screen and an
error is logged to a System Error Log (SEL). The system
will continue booting with a degraded state. The user
may replace the part causing the error.
• Pause – a message is displayed on the screen and user
input is required to continue. The user may take
immediate corrective action or can choose to continue
booting.
• Halt – the system cannot boot unless the error is
resolved. The user must replace the faulty part and
restart the system.
All codes are reported to the SEL and are available for
examination at a later time (see
“SEL viewer” on page 63 ).
