Overview
The Sony Digital Mass Storage System stores, detects,
records and reproduces large amounts of data using
cassette tapes for a DIR-1000-series digital
instrumentation recorder or DTF digital tape streamer.
This system has two series; the DMS-8800 series,
which includes a digital instrumentation recorder, and
the DMS-8400 series which includes a digital tape
streamer. Each series is composed of the following
four types of consoles: a B-type Basic Console such as
a DMS-8800B or DMS-8400B, a D-type Drive
Console such as a DMS-8800D or DMS-8400D, a C-
type Cassette Console such as a DMS-8800C or DMS-
8400C, and a J-type Junction Console such as a DMS-
8800J or DMS-8400J. These four-types console allow
you to construct a variety of systems.
The DMS-8800 series can store up to 3.0 petabytes of
data (non compressed), and the DMS-8400-series can
store data of up to 2.3 petabytes (non compressed).
Features
Easy system expansion
With combinations of the four types of consoles,
configuration of a variety of systems is possible.
Storage of large amounts of data
Using an L-size cassette, the following amount of data
can be stored.

a) The DMS-8400 system is the system mounting the GY-
2120 or GY-10.
b) The DMS-8800 system is the system mounting the DIR-
1000-series units and DFC-1700.
Different types of cassettes mountable
The DMS-8800-series can use L and M size cassettes,
and the DMS-8400 series can use the L and S size
cassettes simultaneously.
Cassette management using bar codes
The system contains a bar-code reader to aid in
management of cassettes with bar-code labels attached
to cassettes.
Easy control
The system can be controlled via an SCSI or API
interface.
Self-diagnostic functions
The system can check a DIR-1000-series unit or DTF
mounted in the system as well as the system itself, and
the results are displayed with the GUI (Graphical User
Interface).
