Lubrication oils are divided into ISO VG viscosity classes according to ISO 3448 and
DIN 51519.

Selecting the viscosity class ISO VG (40 °C)
The maximum operating temperature of synthetic oil is 90 °C.
Selecting the lubricating oils
If the gear unit is operated outdoors under the following conditions, an oil heater must
be used:
• When the start-up temperature is below the pour point of the oil, in case of pres-
sure or bath lubrication
• When the initial viscosity of the oil is larger than 2000 cSt, in case of pressure lu-
brication.
8.1.2 Bearing greases
Standard
If grease is used to lubricate the bearings, this is specified on the gear unit and in the
technical specifications. The greases contain EP additives and have hardness class
NLGI 2.

Selecting the grease
The greases are only used for rolling bearings. If the gear unit requires grease lubrica-
tion, a nameplate with the recommended grease is attached to the gear unit.
8.1.3 Slow-running gear units
If the pitch line speed at the lowest stage is slower than 1m/s (n
2
< 15 1/min), the gear
unit is operating in the limit lubrication range. SEW-EURODRIVE recommends the fol-
lowing:
• Using mineral oils wit EP and wear-protection additives.
• The running viscosity should be ≥ 100 cSt.
• Make sure that oil and oil pan are clean.
