5. Remove the tube cap and add 5 drops of Hardness LR #2 Reagent. Cap the tube and invert 5 times to
mix. Note the time and allow 1 minute for color stability.
6. Follow Operating Instructions in section 3 to obtain result in terms of mg/L (p.p.m.) calcium carbonate
(CaCO3). Various forms of water hardness are conventionally expressed this way, and this allows
comparison of different results, but does not necessarily indicate that hardness is present in this form.
Notes:
Note 1: If display reads “Dilute and Retest” dilute a fresh sample with distilled or deionized water, retest, and
multiply reading by the dilution factor as explained in section 2.3.
Note 2: Reagent No. 2 is sufficient to bring the pH to 10 ± 1. Adjusting the pH of samples is otherwise not
recommended, since hardness will likely be introduced by other buffers.
Note 3: If screen reads “Error”, retest with fresh reagents
Note 4: The R-4301 drop tip can become partially clogged over time. Snap it off the bottle and rinse with
water periodically.
