Correct use of the blood pressure monitor
Preparation for measurement
Relax for about 5 to 10 minutes before taking the measurement.
Avoid eating, drinking alcohol, smoking, exercising, and swimming for 30 minutes
before taking a measurement.
Remove any clothing that fits tightly to your arm.
Always measure on the same arm (normally on the left).
If you measure your blood pressure regularly, take the readings at the same time each
day, as blood pressure changes during the day.
All of these factors may falsify the measurement result.
Common factors that can skew measurements
Stressing to support the arm during the measurement can increase blood pressure
and distort the measurement.
Make sure you are in a comfortable and relaxed position and do not activate any
muscle in the measuring arm during the measurement.
Use a cushion for support if necessary.
If the artery in the arm is lower or higher than the heart, the measurement will be
wrong.
Warning :
Use only the cuff supplied with the blood pressure monitor.
A loose cuff causes a false reading.
With repeated measurements, blood collects in the arm, which can lead to a false
measurement.
Consecutive blood pressure measurements should be repeated after a 1 minute break
between each, or after the arm has been raised long enough to allow the accumulated
blood to drain.
