Description of serial ports

Conflicting COM port addresses

The following table lists the COM1 and COM2 addresses that conflict
with those addresses belonging to COM3 through COM6.

COM1

COM1 is either a full 8-wire RS-232 (standard) or an industrial 4-wire
RS-232 (optional) configuration. The default I/O address for COM1 is
3F8h, but can be changed in SETUP to any of the addresses in Table
5-3. Refer to the SETUP programs chapter for more information on
running SETUP. IRQ4 is dedicated to COM1 and if COM1 is not used
under interrupt control, IRQ4 may be used by other resources. For
example, when COM1 is the console, COM1 uses IRQ4. COM1 can be
used for console I/O or RS-232 I/O. COM1 and COM2 share the J13,
20-pin header. See the chapter on IRQ routing and opto IRQs for more
details.
