ERMS
ALTERNATING CURRENT (AC) - A flow of electrical current which reverses its direction of flow at regular
intervals in a conductor.
AMMETER - Measures flow of electrical current in amperes. Ammeters are connected in series with the cir -
cuit to be tested.
AMPERE - Unit of measure for current flow in a circuit.
CIRCUIT - A continuous, unbroken path along a conductor through which electrical current can flow from a
source, through various components, and back to the source.
CIRCUIT BREAKER - A device to protect an electrical circuit from overloads, and can be reset, or will auto -
matically reset.
COLD CRANKING AMPS (CCA) - The load cranking capacity of a battery at low temperatures.
CONDUCTOR - Material which allows electrical current to flow.
CONTINUITY - Unbroken path along a conductor through which electrical current can flow.
CURRENT - Movement of electricity along a conductor.
DIODE - Electrical device allowing current to pass through it in one direction only.
DIODE (RESISTOR TYPE) - Like a diode except also adds resistance to passing of current, and reduces
amperes.
DIRECT CURRENT (DC) - A flow of electrons moving in the same direction along a conductor from a point
of high potential to one of lower potential.
FUSE - A device to protect an electrical circuit from overloads, that needs to be replaced when blown.
GROUNDED CIRCUIT - Voltage is going directly to ground, usually resulting in no component operation
and/or blown circuit breaker. Test for grounded circuit with volt/ohm meter; check for continuity between cir -
cuit wire and ground.
OHM - Standard unit for measuring resistance to flow of an electrical current.
OHMMETER - Instrument for measuring resistance in ohms of an electrical circuit.
OPEN CIRCUIT - An open circuit occurs when a voltage carrying wire is broken/open, breaking the circuit
and interrupting flow of current through the circuit. Voltage is not getting from control point to operating point.
Test for open circuit with volt/ohm meter; check from one end of wire to other end. If voltage is not present,
trace circuit from control point to operating point until open is found.
RELAY - Electrical switch which opens and closes a circuit automatically when activated.
RESISTANCE - Opposing force offered by a circuit. Measured in ohms.
