3. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Maximum speed according to rotor
Centrifugation is a separation technique based on the movement of the particles that are
displaced to the distal end of the rotation axis depending on their shape and mass.
The Relative Centrifugal Force (R.C.F.) is the required force to separate particles. It is
given as some value times that of gravity (g).
The R.C:F. is calculated with the following formula:
1.118·10
-5
is a constant.
r= radius, the horizontal distance in centimetres
from the rotation axis to the bottom of the sample tube.
n= rotation speed expressed in revolutions per minute (r.p.m.).
F.C.R.= 1.118·10-5·r·n2

Pre-cooling function
This function allows the centrifuge chamber to reach quickly the pre-selected tempera-
ture. For this purpose:
- Once temperature has been set press the pre-cooling function button
(2.16)
.
- The rotor will spin at 3000 rpm and the timer will start counting up. The tem-
perature inside the centrifuge will go down quickly until reaching the pre-selected tem-
perature; once it has been reached, the rotor will go on spinning to keep it.
Note: To allow the rotor itself reach the pre-selected temperature pre-cooling time must
be longer. The larger the rotor is, the longer the time must be.
Note: if temperature decreases slowly, check that the ventilation grilles of the quipment
are completely free of obstructions
To start with the centrifugation protocol, press stop
(2.19)
and then start
(2.18)
.
Programs
The centrifuge 2818 presents a memory to store up to 5 different centrifugation pro-
grams. To save a program, proceed as follows:
Select the parameters of the protocol to be saved.
Press Prog. button of the program selection buttons
(2.14)
Then, press the number in which the program is going to be saved.
To select a program preciously saved, press the corresponding button number and the
different parameters will be displayed.
Rotor detection
Once it is operating, the centrifuge detects the rotor used and shows its corresponding
number (Rn) on display
(2.13)
. If pre-selected speed is not adequate for the rotor used, the
centrifuge will stop automatically and will display the error.
