2. Tests

Test types

Blue Dye test

The 

Blue Dye

 test is used mainly in the pharmaceutical industry to leak test tablet blister 

packages.

The tablet blister packages are submerged into a colored liquid (in most cases methylene 
blue) in the desiccator, and then exposed to vacuum. Any defective blister will be evacuated 
as well, and when the desiccator is vented, the pressure difference will cause the colored 
liquid to enter these blisters, thus revealing the leaks.

We recommend using the dome lid desiccator for this type of test - see 

"Desiccator" on page 14

 

for details.

A 

Blue Dye

 test is divided into 4 phases:

Evacuation

The desiccator is evacuated to the test vacuum.

Testing

The test vacuum is maintained for a fixed period of time.

Venting

Venting of the desiccator to ambient pressure.

Penetration

Period where the pressure difference causes the colored liquid to penetrate into any 
defective blisters.
