In cases of less severe frontal
impacts, roll-overs, side or rear
collisions, or other accidents
during which no substantial fo rce s
are exerted on the fro n t of the
vehicle, the airbag and em ergency
tensioning retractor will not be
activated. Therefore it is extrem ely
im portant that all vehicle o ccu ­
pants utilize the th ree-point seat
belts as described in the O w ner’s
Manual.
The operational readiness of the
system is indicated by the “ SRS”
control light (3) in the instrum ent
cluster. This control light will com e on
after turning the ignition key to
position “ 1 ” or “ 2” . A fte r approxi­
mately 10 seconds, the light will go
out. If it does not com e on, does not
go out, or flickers on and off, the
system is m alfunctioning and the
vehicle should be taken to an
authorized MERCEDES-BENZ dealer
immediately in order to have the
system checked and repaired; o th e r­
wise it may not be activated when
needed in an accident.
The service life of the airbag and
em ergency tensioning retractor
extends to the date indicated on the
glove com partm ent sticker. To p ro ­
vide continued reliability of the sys­
tem after that date, it should be
inspected by an authorized
MERCEDES-BENZ dealer at that
time.
Warning!
A fte r the activation of the “ SRS” the
gas generators will tem porarily
release a small volume of sm oke in
the vehicle interior. This smoke,
however, is neither injurious to your
health nor does it indicate a fire in the
vehicle.
No m odifications of any kind may be
made to any com ponents or wiring of
th e “ SRS” . This includes the installa­
tion of additional trim material,
badges, etc., over the steering wheel
hub. Im proper w ork on the system,
including in co rre ct installation or
removal, can lead to possible injury
through an uncontrolled activation of
the airbag and em ergency tensioning
retractor. In addition, through im pro­
per w o rk there is a risk of rendering
the ,,SRS” inoperative. Therefore, any
w o rk on the system or in the vicinity
of its com ponents should be per­
form ed by an authorized
MERCEDES-BENZ dealer.
If the airbag unit, em ergency te nsion­
ing re tra cto r or vehicle is being
scrapped or if the vehicle is being
serviced at a shop w hich is not an
authorized MERCEDES-BENZ dealer,
it is the drive r’s responsibility to give
notice that the vehicle is equipped
w ith “ SRS” and that safety in stru c­
tio n s are available at all authorized
MERCEDES-BENZ dealers.
