obtain access to both ends, and erect safety barriers to protect the operator
from traffic hazards and to prevent intrusion by unauthorized personnel.
Beacon Warning lights are recommended.
Verify that the station ground is intact and presents an impedance of
LESS
than 5 Ohms to earth/ground.
Making Connections
Before operating the SG32-1500M the following connections and safety
procedures need to be followed:
Ensure the cable to be tested is Earthed/Grounded and de-energized.
Connect the Earthing/Grounding cable of the SG32-1500M to a suitable
Earth/Ground point and the Earth/Ground stud on the SG32-1500M.
Connect the HV Return to the concentric neutral of the cable under test.
Connect the HV connection of the HV cable to the conductor of the cable
under test.
Cordon off a safety zone around instrument and all exposed cable
terminations.
Connect the AC line cord to the SG32 unit and its other end to AC Power
only after all connections are made, and the test area is cordoned off.
Earth (Ground) the Instrument
Prior to operating the SG32-1500M or making any other connections the unit
has to be Earthed/Grounded. This is achieved by connecting the supplied Earth
/Ground lead to the Earth/Ground terminal on the side of the SG32 unit and
directly to a clean metallic Earth/Ground rod / bus at the switchgear or
transformer. If in doubt use an Earth/Ground Tester to confirm the ground
impedance. It is not acceptable from a safety point of view to just rely on the
120/ 230V line cord earth/ground as this presents a high impedance ground
especially when working in the surge / thump mode with very high frequency
discharges.
AC Supply Cord
The appropriate (Country specific) SG32-1500M supplied supply lead/cord
should be inserted into the receptacle at the rear of the instrument and
connected to a suitable stable supply in the range of 47-63Hz at 108 to 265Volts.
Do not use extension leads, unless suitably rated.
The maximum power consumption for the SG32-1500M is 1200 VA when used
with AC input.
