A steel edge with radius R = 0.5 mm, without burr, was employed in this case. Based on this
test, the equipment is suitable in corresponding composition to be used over similar edges
(inquire with the manufacturer about this), such as are existing for example on rolled-steel
profile sections, on timber beams or on encased, rounded roof parapets.
Despite this test, in case of horizontal or sloped employment where a risk of fall over an edge
exists, the following must be considered as mandatory:
1. If the risk assessment carried out before the start of work indicates that the fall-zone
edge relates to a particularly ‘cutting’ and/or ‘non-burr free’ edge (e.g. an uncovered
parapet, trapezoid sheeting or a sharp concrete edge) then
•
appropriate arrangements should be made before the start of work so that a
fall over the edge is ruled out
•
an edge protector should be installed before the start of work or
•
contact should be made with the manufacturer.
2. The anchor point of the flexible guide may not lie below the platform (e.g platform, flat
roof) of the user.
3. The deflection at the edge (measured between the two legs of the flexible anchor
line) must be at least 90°
4. The
required clearance
below the edge is at least
5 m
5. The subsystem is always to be employed so that no untensioned rope arises. A
length adjustment may be implemented only if the user does not move in the fall edge
direction in this case.
6. In order to limit a pendular fall, the working area and/or lateral movements from the
central axis to both sides should, in each case, be restricted to 1.50 m. In other
cases, no individual anchoring points rather e.g. fastening devices of Class D
according to DIN-EN 795 are to be employed.
7.
Note:
In the case of a fall over an edge, there is a risk of injury during the harnessing
action as a result of the falling person crashing into structural members and/or
structural parts.
8. Special rescue measures should be defined and exercised for the event of a fall over
the edge.

Function and application
In case of the use of lanyards (e.g. safety ropes) with more than two meters length, fall
arresters must be used. With use according to specification, these have the task of
preventing, as far as possible, any untensioned rope buildup possibly arising due to too large
rope lengths. This reduces the fall height of a possible fall.
The accompanying fall arrester MAS SK 12 (S 16) is an appliance which can be employed
especially for upward and downward movements. In this case, the accompanying fall arrester
moves automatically on a flexible anchor line during ascension (rope diameter coordinated to
the device type and fabricated completely by the manufacturer) which is held to a large
extent tight either through the fastening of a weight or through a dead weight on the ground.
In case of a fall from a height, the impact is reduced to less than 600 KG (EN 353/2) by the
shock absorber.
The application of this fall arrester is therefore employed mainly as a sub-system of personal
protective equipment in the ascent area against fall from a height, since the user can either
use both hands for his own safety or, however, one hand for carrying light materials or tools.
This accompanying fall arrester is to be used exclusively with full body harnesses, suitable
for the application, tested in accordance with DIN - EN 361. Also the mass of the user,
including tools and other materials, must be considered here.
Notes on use
Use of the accompanying fall arrester with vertical application
The accompanying fall arrester type MAS SK 12 (S 16) is supplied ready fabricated by the
manufacturer, i.e. at the end of the flexible anchor line an end security element has been
attached, so that the accompanying fall arrester cannot slide unintentionally.
With fastening the accompanying fall arrester, it is to be ensured that the arrow ("above") on
the device always points in the direction of the fastening point.
Furthermore, the connecting element at the beginning of the flexible anchor line must be
checked for correct seating and close-off.
The operation of this accompanying fall arrester manually for downward movement may be
implemented only with a secure base for stance. If this is not considered, danger to life exists
since the fall arrester does not lock in case of a trip fall.
The accompanying fall arrester is always supplied with a shock absorber sewn on at the ring
eyelet (length 0.44m) with connecting element (max. length of the shock absorber including
the connecting elements: 0.57 m). This connecting element is fastened into a reception
eyelet of the full body harness and must be checked for secure seating and closure. Here, if
possible, the front reception eyelet should be selected. The shock absorber may not be
either manipulated or made longer, since an increased drop height would result from that and
thus a failure of the fall arrester, or it can lead to the impacting of the body on objects or the
ground as a result of the greater fall distances.

In case of flexible guides with larger lengths (> 15.0 m), the necessary open space to be
expected due to the rope extension below the feet of the user according to the fall distance
increase is to be determined. The manufacturer provides information about this.
The anchor point for the flexible anchor line must be located above the user, if possible in a
vertical arrangement (see directions for use General - Anchor point).
Use of the accompanying fall arrester with horizontal application
The accompanying fall arrester, including flexible guide, was also tested for horizontal
employment and a fall over an edge was successfully simulated.
