Now activate an argon-supported current at flow rates of
0.3 l/min, 1 l/min, 3 l/min and 10 l/min in this sequence and verify by ear (judging by the blow-
ing noise) that the gas flow increases adequately from step to step.
B. Checking output power
The effective HF output power should be checked for exemplary currents. If you do not have an HF
power meter at hand, you should at least verify the continuous adjustability of the output power by
lamp load (using a 100-W incandescent bulb).
C. Safety checks according to IEC 601-1
These measurements are frequently carried out with an automated safety tester that switches off
and on the mains voltage several times during the automatic testing procedure. As in the hardware
versions 00 and 01, however, the maxium remains switched off after a power interruption, you
have two options – either performing the measurements manually or setting the jumper X10 to po-
sition 1-2 on the power management card. The latter switches on the unit permanently, but you
must of course open the housing. As from hardware version 02, the unit remains switched on after
a power interruption, provided the interruption does not exceed 4 seconds.
In the context of the regular (periodic) safety checks, the following checks shall be carried out in
accordance with IEC 601-1 requirements:
1. Check the protective conductor resistance between the protective conductor contact of the
power plug and the maxium’s equipotential bonding pin. As specified in IEC 601-1, section 18,
the measured value shall not exceed 0.2
Ω
when using a measuring current of 25 A.
2. Ground leakage current, normal case: Measure the current in the protective conductor of the
power supply cable without fault simulation. The measured value shall not exceed 1.5 times the
value measured initially (reference value) as indicated in the Works Test Report. At the same
time, it shall not exceed the absolute upper limit of 500 µA as specified in IEC 601-1, section
19.3, either.
3. Ground leakage current, first fault: Measure the current in the protective conductor of the power
supply cable while simulating an interruption of the ground-related phase N (this switches off
the unit). The measured value shall not exceed 1.5 times the value measured initially (refer-
ence value) as indicated in the Works Test Report. At the same time, it shall not exceed the
upper limit of 1,000 µA as specified in IEC 601-1, section 19.3, either. This value is usually
twice as high as the measured normal-case ground leakage current.
4. Housing leakage current, normal case: Measure the current flowing from the maxium’s equipo-
tential bonding pin to ground. As this current path constitutes a parallel path to the protective
conductor, the measured value is normally very low but non-defined because it depends on the
indeterminate relationship between the various grounding resistances involved. The measured
value shall not exceed the absolute upper limit of 100 µA.
5. Housing leakage current, first fault, protective conductor: This is equivalent to the measured
normal-case ground leakage current because the test path now functions as a protective con-
ductor. The measured value shall not exceed 1.5 times the value measured initially (reference
value) and not exceed the absolute maximum of 500 µA as specified in IEC 601-1, section
19.3, either.
