Neutral Electrode (NE) Status
The maxium indicates the status of the neutral (or inactive/dispersive) electrode,
which is mandatory for all monopolar HF surgical applications, in two different
ways. First, the front-panel LED (14) tells the user whether or not a neutral elec-
trode has been connected and the function is available. In addition to this indi-
cator, the neutral electrode status is graphically indicated on the maxium’s dis-
play as well.
The maxium automatically recognizes the type of neutral electrode connected – either single-
surfaced or split. This automatic function can be configured (via the Setup menu) so that the sys-
tem only accepts split NEs, thus enhancing patient safety.
If both the NE indicator (14) and the NE symbol on the display light up in red, there is a malfunc-
tion. Either no neutral electrode has been connected (single-surfaced electrode), or the split NE
has not been attached correctly to the patient’s skin. Note that this second type of monitoring
(PCS) is available only for split neutral electrodes.
In such a case (red status), the maxium automatically blocks monopolar output – no monopolar
current can be activated. Instead, an alert is heard. However, bipolar currents can be activated
nonetheless.
If the LED (14) and the graphical NE indicator on the display are both green, the neutral electrode
is functioning correctly (in technical terms) and the user can activate monopolar (cutting as well as
coagulation) currents. However, because the unit can also be activated when a single-surfaced
neutral electrode has been connected to the unit but not attached to the patient, the user is re-
quired to exercise special care when using such electrodes!
If “Baby NE” is selected under “Neutral electrode” (in “Setup”), the symbol
shown on the left will appear on the maxium’s display. The use of smaller neu-
tral electrodes means that the application of the electric current is automatically
limited for safety reasons. Besides, only defined types of current (see section
14.1, “Technical Data & Certificate”) can be used in this mode.
Note
•
We recommend using split disposable neutral electrodes!
