8   Operation

8.1   Minimum Connections

In order to operate the drive you must perform minimum connections. At the very least 
you need to connect your PC serial port to the SimpleServo drive. If you also wish to 
rotate a motor you must perform minimum system connections. See Section 10 for 
various system connections examples. Below is given minimum connection list:

WARNING!

Hazard of electrical shock!  Circuit potentials are up to 480 VAC above 
earth ground. Avoid direct contact with the printed circuit board or 
with circuit elements to prevent the risk of serious injury or fatality.  
Disconnect incoming power and wait 60 seconds before servicing 
drive.  Capacitors retain charge after power is removed.

•  Connect serial cable between SimpleServo’s P2 and your PC serial port.
•  Connect a Power Cable between an external 120/240 VAC (300-480 VAC for 480 

VAC models), 50/60 Hz power source to input power terminal P1.

•  Connect motor encoder cable to SimpleServo feedback connector P4 (P11 on 

option module if motor equipped with resolver).

•  Connect motor windings U, V, W (sometimes called R, S, T) according to Section 

5.1.1.  Make sure that motor cable shield also connected to PE terminal of P7.

•  Provide Enable switch according to Section 8.5.
•  Perform drive configuration (see below).

Note

You must configure the drive before it can operate.  
Proceed to Section 8.2.

8.2   Configuration of the SimpleServo

Regardless of the mode in which you wish to operate, you must first configure the 
SimpleServo for your particular motor, mode of operation, and additional features if 
used.

Drive configuration consists of following steps: 

•  Motor Selection
•  Mode of operation selection
•  Drive parameters (i.e. current limit, acceleration/deceleration) setup
•  Operational limits (velocity or position limits) setup
•  Input/Output (I/O) setup
•  Velocity / position compensator setup 
•  Optionally store your settings in the file and exit the program
