6. Instrument setup– settIng the polarIzer
6.3 Setting the polarizer
For the Leica DMi8 with tiltable transmitted light illumina-
tor arm
Start by removing the specimen from the microscope stage.
Leica DMi8 with manual condenser:
• Select the bright-field position on the condenser.
• Slide the analyzer into the analyzer slot on the right side
of the stand.
• Swing the condenser head inward.
• Rotate the polarizer until the optimum extinction position
is reached.
Leica DMi8 with motorized condenser and polarizer:
• Select the POL method. If the analyzer is present on the
fluo turret as an analyzer block, it will automatically swing
inwards. A manual analyzer must be manually inserted.
On motorized condensers with motorized polarizers, the
polarizers move into position automatically.
• Insert the centering key into the corresponding openings
on the condenser (Fig. 57).
• Set the optimum extinction (max. darkness). (The analyzer
must be swung inwards.)
• Remove the centering keys again.
Place the specimen back onto the stage.
