Note:
To avoid lateral strain on components the aircraft wings should
be held level for any undercarriage cycling.
17. Although the hydraulic system incorporates a priority valve,
operation of more than one service at a time should be avoided.
Stalling
18. The stall is docile without a tendency for any wing drop. Recovery
is affected by gently lowering the nose whilst simultaneously applying
power and using right rudder to maintain balanced flight.
Circuit and Landing
19. The Lancaster circuit is flown at 500ft agl. On a suitable downwind
heading with the speed below 150kts, 0ins boost/2400RPM, the
undercarriage is lowered. Once it is DOWN and locked Flap 20
°
is
selected. The latter will produce a strong nose-up trim change which
should be anticipated with a coordinated elevator trim input. The speed
will invariably stabilise at about 115kts. The aircraft’s slow speed
allows for close spacing when downwind but to ensure an accurate final
approach is flown the aircraft should not be turned onto final too soon.
During the final turn select Flap 40
°
and increase the RPM to 2850.
The latter action will cause the boost to reduce. A flat approach is to be
flown with the speed steadily reducing towards the threshold speed of
90kts. Power reductions through minus 2ins and minus 4ins are made.
The aircraft should cross the threshold with minus 6ins set. The Flight
Engineer is to call the IAS. A gentle coordinated flare is required. The
PF is to call ‘CUT’ whereupon the PNF smoothly selects power to idle.
The tail will naturally lower as speed reduces. The control column is
