Rudders.
The rudders are attached to the fins and have a horn
balance at their base to assist in movement and mass balance horns
towards the top to prevent flutter. A trim tab is also fitted.
11.
Elevators
. The elevators are at the rear of each tailplane and are
covered in light alloy. The elevators have trim tabs and balance tabs,
the trim tab being positioned innermost.
Aircraft Controls
12.
Flying Controls.
The flying controls are conventional: a
horn-
type
handwheel control column operating the ailerons and elevators,
pendulum type rudder pedals operating the rudders. The rudder pedals
are independently adjustable by holding aside the spring-loaded latch
on each inside pedal arm and raising and moving the footrest over the
ratchet mechanism. Pedal movement applies differential braking when
the wheel brakes are applied. Tubular push-pull connections are used
except for the aileron controls in the fuselage, which consists of chains,
tie rods and cables.
13.
Trimming Tabs.
Trimming tabs are fitted to the trailing edge of all
control surfaces. They are individually adjusted in a natural sense by
moving a trim wheel to the starboard side of the Pilot’s seat, through
cables, chains and tie rods. Each trim wheel has an indicator window
graduated in 12 units labelled: NOSE HEAVY/TAIL HEAVY for the
elevators, PORT TURN/STBD TURN for the rudders and PORT HEAVY/
STBD HEAVY for the ailerons.
Undercarriage
14. The undercarriage consists of two retractable main wheel units, one
under each inboard engine nacelle and a fully castoring tail wheel unit
which is not retractable.
15. Each main wheel unit consists of two shock absorber struts, a K
strut and an axle, collectively known as the panel assembly. The shock
absorber struts are oil and air filled (1000PSI) to provide damping action
to the aircraft on landing. Two retraction jacks enable the undercarriage
to be retracted backwards and upwards into the engine nacelle.
When retracted the units are completely faired-in by doors which are
