4. Remarks in respect of the determi-
ned use
It is mandatory according to German law BGV A3 §6 Cl.2
that the line is made and maintained inactive during main-
tenance.
Since determining a live state of a cables, especially earth
cable, is not always possible alternatively the live line sta-
tus can be verifi ed by cutting the cable with this safety
cutting unit. At the same time the net provider should be
contacted.
The portable cable cutting unit type ESSGL serves to
check cables whether they are live or not and to cut
stranded copper and Aluminum cables and conductors
with a nominal voltage of max. 60 kV and a nominal fre-
quency of 60 Hz where it can not be determined whether
they are live without any risk for the operator. (see EN
50110-1 Abs. 6.2.3) Single core cables up to a maximum
of 110 kV and max. 60 Hz can also be cut in combination
with organisational measures which take into account the
special conditions which must be observed when cutting
single core cables.
Do not disregard the safety instructions supplied in the
German standard DIN VDE 0105 part 100 Chapter 9.
4.1. Operation of the unit
1. After removing the safety cutting unit out of the carry-
ing case the unit must be checked for possible dama-
ges.
2. Roll out the insulated hose (Picture 1,13) completely.
This distance serves for your safety in case the cable
should be live. Please take into consideration that the
hose will get shorter when under pressure. It must be
guaranteed that the position of the cutting head will
not change during the cutting cycle.
Attention
When paying out the insulated hose please
make sure that you can see the section of the
cable where the cable is cut.
This means provides that no trespassers stay in the dan-
ger zone. In addition and prior starting the cutting pro-
cedure the cutting zone must be cordoned off in a 10 m
radius.
In case the insulated hose can not be payed out due to a
lack of space other suitable means of protection must be
provided such as earth walls or ditches.
On the pump as well as on the cutting head (acc. to EN
50340) there are fastening points (for bolts with wing nuts)
for the cable providing equipotential bonding.
Attention
Do not ground the cutting head in Germany.
(see BGI 845 (ZH 1/437))
In some European countries the cutting head must
be grounded due to possibly cutting one phase cables
causing a one phase short circuit.
3. Check the battery capacity of both batteries by briefl y
actuating the trigger (Picture 1, 6). If the LED indica-
tes a low battery as described in chapter 4.3 the bat-
teries must be charged prior to starting the working
cycle.
4. Plug the connecting devices (Picture 1,9) between
pump and hose properly until they engage safely and
can not be disengaged by pulling.
5. Position the cutting head (Picture 1,12) to the cable in
an angle of 90°. The cutting head must be positioned
in a way that the cable is situated in the open cutting
head respectively between the blades (Picture 1,10).
Attention
One core cables should be consolidated and cut
as a three core cable up to 60kV maximum.
Attention
Do not disconnect the cutting heads before the
blades are completely retracted.
Attention
Do not operated the unit during rain.
6. Now the cutting cycle can be started by actuating the
trigger (Picture 1,6). The cutting cycle is terminated
when the max. operating pressure is reached. The
pressure pick up can be monitored with the pressure
gauge over the entire cutting cycle.
Attention
The cutting cycle must be fully completed that
means until a possible 2- to 3-pole short circuit
occurs.
7. By actuating the release button (Picture 1,4) once the
blades (Picture 1,10) will be returned into the starting
position. Alternatively the blades can be returned into
the starting position by actuating the trigger again uti-
lizing the autoretraction function of the tool. The cable
is completely cut now.
8. The operator of the safety cutting unit has to make
sure e.g. by asking the net provider, whether the right
cable was cut. This is of special importance with de-
leted nets.
Attention
Do not approach the cutting head before the net
control o
ffi
ce, respectively net provider, gives
the OK.
In case of cutting into a live cable with this safety cutting
unit the cut can be continued and completed with this unit.
In most cases the unit stays functioning.
Attention
In this case the operator must always contact
the net provider.
After cutting a live cable the unit must be checked in res-
pect of possible damages. If the blades (Picture 1,10) are
damaged they can be exchanged by the operator.
9. Remove the cutting head (Picture 1,12) from the cut-
ting location by using the appropriate carrying points
(Cylinder body, handles)
10. After use the safety cutting unit must be cleaned ca-
refully. The insulated hose (Picture 1,13) must be
treated with special care. It must be cleaned with a
dry clean cloth and the coupling (Picture 1,9) must be
checked in respect of possible damages. Afterwards
the unit must be stored away in the appropriate carry-
ing case.
Notes on the use of the cutting head SSK85/3 see pictu-
res 14 and 15.
