Installation and operating instructions
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
•
Kastor wood-burning fireplaces have been designed and tested for
space heating. All other use is prohibited.
•
Never cover a fireplace in any way while it is in use or hot.
•
Do not place ornaments etc. on the fireplace.
•
For optimum efficiency and safety, the fireplace door must always
be closed during use. Only if the fireplace is kept under constant
observation (when grilling sausages, for example) may the door be
left open while a fire is burning.
•
Doors and panes of glass must always be treated with care.
•
If the fireplace has been subjected to damp conditions for a
prolonged period and has not been used during this time (for
example, in an unheated summer cottage etc.), it should always be
inspected before use to ensure that it has not been damaged by
corrosion.
•
Check that there is sufficient draught in the flue before lighting a
fire.
•
The fireplace is designed to heat spaces both by convection and
radiation. It is therefore a highly efficient source of heat. The fireplace
body, sides and door radiate a great deal of heat to the surrounding
air and also heat the floor close to the fireplace (see 2.3).
Be careful!
The handles, glass door and fireplace body can become very
hot.
•
If there is reason to believe that a fire has started in the chimney,
shut the door to the fire-box and the air intake, but allow the flue
damper in the chimney to remain open. Contact the fire brigade if you
need help to extinguish the fire.
A chimney must always be inspected
by an authorised chimney sweeper or the corresponding relevant
authority after a chimney fire.
•
All chimneys fires, even if extinguished, must be reported to
the fire authorities.
•
Do not allow children to light a fire unless this is done under the
supervision of an adult. Do not leave children unsupervised near to
the firebox.
1.1 USING THE “COOL GRIP”
To prevent burns each fireplace is always supplied with a so
called
“cool grip”
.
This is used to open and close the door, and to adjust the air
intake.
Always keep the “cool grip” close to the fireplace.
2A. INSTALLATION (not Cavalier)
2A.1 PREPARATIONS
On some models the supporting frame may be removed from the
fireplace body to facilitate transport. Ensure that the threaded pins
on the underside of the fireplace fit into the corresponding holes in
the supporting frame, and use the nuts supplied to secure them in
place.
If you remove the fire-bricks, make a note of the order in which
they are removed, as this will simplify assembly at a later stage.
Any components that have been removed for transport must be
assembled as shown in the sketches.
The fireplace may also be installed on a foundation of brick or
similar
non-combustible material.
The fireplace is transported in a vertical position to avoid
transport damage. Remove any labels, except for the nameplate,
on the fireplace before it is used.
2A.1.1. UNPACKING/INSTALLING THE SOAPSTONE BLOCKS
(Bravo and Solei)
Bravo:
Unpacking after delivery
-
Remove the transport packaging.
Tie the soapstone blocks before removing the hood to prevent the
blocks from tipping over.
-
Undo the 2 fixing screws for the fireplace lid (under the rear edge
of the top panel).
-
Lift the hood up.
-
Carefully lift up the blocks in the soapstone surround, making
sure that none of the fixing pins are damaged or missing.
Assembly
-
Place the metal fireplace frame in the desired location, ensuring
that there is sufficient space behind the fireplace to adjust the
screws and fit a connecting rear flue.
-
Fit the soapstone blocks into place on top of one another around
the sides of the fireplace, and fix them temporarily (for example,
with a piece of rope), so that they cannot tip over.
-
Lift the fireplace hood/top panel into place and secure it with
screws. If the fireplace has a rear-flue connection to the chimney,
refer to section 2.4
-
Slide the entire construction carefully into place.
Solei:
Unpacking after delivery
-
Remove the transport packaging.
Tie the soapstone blocks before removing the lid to prevent the
blocks from tipping over.
-
Undo the screws at the front and rear of the fireplace hood.
(There are 2 screws on the front, one on each side above the
door. The two remaining screws are at the rear edge of the
fireplace hood.)
-
Remove the fireplace hood.
-
Remove the metal bands (on top of the soapstone blocks) and
carefully lift the blocks away one by one.
-
Lift the firebox from the frame.
-
Ensure that all components (especially the soapstone blocks) are
well protected while they are being moved.
Assembly
-
Place the metal fireplace frame in the desired location, ensuring
that there is sufficient space behind the fireplace to adjust the
screws and fit a connecting rear flue.
-
Lift the firebox into place on the frame.
-
Install the soapstone blocks around the sides of the fireplace and
fit the metal bands.
-
Lift the fireplace hood/top panel into place and secure it with
screws. If the fireplace has a rear-flue connection to the chimney,
refer to section 2.4
-
Slide the entire construction carefully into place.
2A.2. STRUCTURAL SUPPORT
Certain fireplace models are very heavy (see the table below).
Check to make sure that the floor is strong enough to support the
weight.
The fireplace must stand on a level, horizontal surface.
Model Weight
(kg
Bravo 98
(270*)
Cavallier 240
Princess 85
Solei 85
(220*)
* Weight including soapstone blocks.
The fireplace is installed on a load-bearing base. If the fireplace is
not connected to an existing masonry chimney, the weight of the
chimney must also be taken into account.
For further advice and instructions concerning the installation of
the fireplace, consult the local fire authorities.
2A.3 SAFETY DISTANCES AND EQUIPMENT
The distances given below must be observed. Failure to do
so may involve a fire hazard!
The fireplace is classed as a “warm-bodied fireplace” (max. temp.
140
o
C), apart from the glass door that is classed as “hot surface” (max.
temp. 350
o
C). A protective plate or equivalent protective surface of
metal or some other non-combustible material must be placed in front
of the fireplace on floors made of a combustible material. The protective
place must project at least 400 mm beyond the front edge of the
fireplace and 100 mm at the sides.
