Maintenance Unit
The Maintenance Unit (M-Unit) is Kaba’s term for a handheld Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) that communicates
with the locks via infrared signal. The M-Unit must be either a Kaba recommended Palm OS based PDA or a
Windows Mobile OS based (PocketPC) PDA which connects to your PC to receive data you download from the PC
(Lock Configuration Files, for example), and to upload/program the locks. The infrared receiver and transmitter on
the PDA, when aligned with those of the E-Plex 5000 or the E-Plex 3000 lock, will transfer data from the PDA to the
lock, or vice versa – from the lock to the PDA – in the case of lock audits or door configuration downloads.
The operations involving the Maintenance Unit are the following:
•
Create Lock Configuration Files (including user data) for each lock (E-Plex 5000 and/or E-Plex 3000) in a
Site.
•
Transfer (HotSync or Active Sync) Lock Configuration Data Files from PC to Maintenance Unit PDA.
•
Program the locks using the Maintenance Unit.
•
Under Preferences on the pulldown menu, obtained by Clicking on the title E-Plex Standard at the top left of
the PDA screen, select the number of records to audit – 500 is default, 50 is minimum and 9,000 is
maximum.
•
Audit the locks using the Maintenance Unit.
•
Transfer (HotSync or ActiveSync) Lock Audit Data Files and/or the Door Configuration data files from
Maintenance Unit to PC.
•
View and/or print audit Fields on PC.
•
Re-synchronize the downloaded door files with the corresponding lock files on the PC so that data in both
are identical.
•
On the pulldown menu obtained by clicking on the title E-Plex Standard at the top left of the PDA screen,
you may also Perform Lock Diagnostics.
The sequence of operations using the M-Unit is described in detail in the following procedures:
1. Transfer Files from PC to Maintenance Unit, located below.
2. Transfer Files from the Maintenance unit to the Locks to program locks, see page 31.
3. Audit Locks, see page 35
4. Transfer Lock Audits from the Maintenance Unit to the PC, see page 37.
5. Download Door (lock) configurations from locks, see page 44.
6. Transfer Downloaded Door configurations files from the Maintenance Unit to the PC, see page 44.
These procedures are not described in detail here since they can be performed by following the steps as directed by
the prompts on the M-Unit PDA screen.
