J.3) Point & Shoot
To acquire multiple EDS analyses in a given (BSE) image ( Fig. 25 )…
1. Select “Point & Shoot” on the analysis mode panel.
2. Click on “Acquisition Properties > [tabs] Imaging or EDS” to set the “Imaging” (see
Section I.1 ) and “EDS” acquisition conditions (see Section J.2 ).
3. Locate an area of interest and set the magnification between 500x and 1000x. At
lower magnification, you will get inaccurate results on points acquired near the edges.
4. Acquire an image by clicking on the button “Acquire average electron image” .
5. Use then the P&S buttons to select 1 or more points / areas to analyse on the image:
a. Deactivate if necessary the first option “Toggle immediate acquisition…”
(usually active on a new project). If this option is active, an acquisition will start
as soon as you select one point or area.
b. If active, deactivate the “Toogle cursor mode” .
c. Select point(s) and/or area(s) to be analysed:
point , a rectangle , an
area with similar intensity , a circle , or a polygon . Use a single click
for point, click-and-drag for rectangle and circle, and (left) click for each corner
of a p right click to close the polygon. In most situation, you will only
set
points, rectangles, or circles .
d. WARNINGS…
i. For accurate results, avoid setting points to close to a phase boundary
or a crack. Keep also in mind that the actual analysed volume is
probably a sphere of 1-2 µm diameter!
ii. For beam sensitive phases (hydrous, carbonate, alkali-rich, etc.), it is
best practice to analyse a “large” area (

2-3 µm-sized rectangle or
circle).
6. When ready, press the play button. The EDS analyses will start. Progress is indicated
by the green bar in the footnote, and by the colour code of each points:
a. Blue = not analysed.
b. Green = analysis is done.
c. Yellow = analysis in progress.
d. Orange = currently selected.
7. To review the results, select the point of analysis in the tab “P&S Select” OR activate
the “Toggle cursor mode” and click on the point of interest on the image.
