mum of 64. Note that hovering over the field will bring up a
Help balloon.
Although we extend our recommendation of using uppercase
characters for this field, receivers with Radio Text capability are
generally the higher-end radios that will display lowercase cha-
racters properly. Use lowercase characters at your discretion.
DRTS
Radio Text
Speed
Although Radio Text is sent to the receiver as a complete mes-
sage and is not parsed by the encoder, the repetition rate at
which the Radio Text message group is refreshed is a user-
defined variable.
Once a station is tuned-in, the time interval before a Radio Text
message is displayed will depend on how frequently this RDS
data group is transmitted and how the receiver manufacturer
has elected to display the message. When Radio Text is a static
message relegated to ‘secondary’ information, the refresh rate
does not need to be very fast.
Click:
DRTS
to show the drop-down menu.
On the DRTS (Dynamic Radio Text Speed)
scale of 1 to 9, a setting of 2 or 3 is usually
quite adequate. Keep in mind that with a
faster refresh rate Radio Text will monopolize
transmission resources and may compromise
the speed of scrolling-PS messaging.
With RT+ applications, DRTS should be set to a higher rate. A
setting of 6 is recommended. (RT+ operation is discussed in its
own section beginning on Page 70.)
The DRTS drop-down menu can also be set to zero. This turns
Radio Text off completely, graying-out the text entry field, and
inhibiting RT+ packets regardless of data in the RTP field.
The Radio Text message and its selected refresh rate will be up-
loaded to the 730 encoder on the next
WRITE
command.
Radio Text
Default Message
and Tags
Provision for a default Radio Text message is included, which is
very similar to the scrolling-PS message default utility dis-
cussed on Page 46. The utility is called-up by clicking:
Tools/RT+ and Defaults.
With a time (in
minutes) set at
any figure oth-
er than zero,
the default Ra-
dio Text mes-
sage will be sent if the dynamic Radio Text field is not updated
by station automation within the programmed time period.
“Tags” for the default Radio Text message may be included as
well; for example, to tag the station Web address or telephone
number in the generic station promo message in the example.
Tagging options are discussed in detail in Section VIII beginning
on Page 70.
