The port selection matrix is reduced
to a hexadecimal value shown to the
right of
UECP Setting:.
This single
hex value (a zero when all ports are
set to ASCII) describes how all ports
have been assigned and may be
used in alternate methods of ad-
dressing the 730 Encoder. The sin-
gle-digit hex value may be entered
with the jog wheel in Menu 65, or
entered with the Terminal utility as
UECP=X
, where X is the hexade-
cimal value.
OTHER SETUP OPTIONS
The M/S Switch
Click:
Format/Station Type (M/S)
to set this RDS flag to
Music
for
the preponderance of today’s FM broadcasting, or to
Speech
for
an all-news or all-talk format, even allowing for jingles and
promo ditties.
The DI Switch
Click:
Format/Txmtr Type (DI)
to set this flag to
Stereo
unless all
transmissions are monaural. The 730 does not support the
other, somewhat esoteric DI options originally included in the
CENELEC specification, which have all but been abandoned.
Regional Mode
Click:
Format/RDS/RBDS
to verify that the 730 Encoder has been
initialized for the proper RadioData standard, RBDS for North
America or RDS for the rest of the world. This may be done
manually as instructed on Page 13 at the very start of the exer-
cise in Section II, holding down the jog wheel and making the
proper selection.
Header
(for RS232)
An important feature of the 730, and one that sets it apart
from earlier models and most competitive products, is the abil-
ity to transmit scrolling-PS messages from unformatted ASCII
text over a serial connection. In the normal and preferred
mode of operation, scrolling-PS messages are preceded by the
special header: DPS=. This prepares the encoder to receive,
format and transmit the text string that follows so that it will
appear properly on the RDS radio faceplate. This preferred
mode is available with any connection to the encoder: USB,
serial or network.
Satellite-delivery music services and some station automation
equipment are able to output only raw, unformatted song title
and artist information to accompany the audio programming.
In these instances, sending the encoder properly-formatted da-
ta with the appropriate headers would require either an addi-
tional computer routine or the use of a third-party ‘data conso-
lidator’ to perform off-site data formatting.
When the
Format/Header (for RS232)
selection is set to
Yes (Nor-
mal Operation)
, the 730 Encoder responds only to scrolling-PS
messaging that is preceded by the required DPS= message
