Scrolling Speed
The rate at which longer messages scroll across
the radio faceplate is set in the
DPSS
entry box.
Click this box and select a drop-down scrolling
speed about midway in the list. The 730 can
perform very rapid transmission of the scrol-
ling-PS message, but some radios cannot keep
up with a really fast scroll. We recommend a ‘6’
as a quick and reliable default scrolling speed.
Parsing
Parsing is the encoder’s ‘smart’ mode of message transmission.
Parsing breaks messages down into meaningful character
groups for efficient display on the 8-character alphanumeric
readout common to all RDS radios. Once the
parsing options are set, the parsing function
is valid for any scrolling-PS message, whether
it is manually typed and uploaded to the DPS
register or received as ASCII text from station
automation.
Click:
Parse
to bring down the parsing op-
tions box.
‘Auto’ Modes
0 - Auto
is the most-used ‘Auto’ Parsing mode. This is the best
option for static-PS ‘street names’ of 8 characters or less, and
also the one that groups and sends short words together.
THIS
IS
consists of seven characters, including spaces, that would be
sent as a group. The same holds true for
OF THE
or
NOW HERE
.
Words, up to and including 8 characters, are sent individually:
WARNING
or
DOUGHNUT
or
BICYCLE
.
In the
0 - Auto
mode, words that exceed 8 characters are ‘sides-
tepped’ through two or more consecutive displays. Examples
might be
EMERGENC
followed by
MERGENCY
, or
SUPERMAR
followed
by
UPERMARK
and
PERMARKE
and
ERMARKET
. This method of
splitting words gives a good sense of continuity and readability.
The
9 - Auto2
mode is quite similar to
0 - Auto
, but treats longer
words a bit differently. Rather than side-stepping the remaind-
er of a longer word through several individual display screens
with a one-character-at-a-time shuffle,
Auto2
presents the re-
mainder of the long word as a single group of characters, cen-
tered in the next display. In this case you would see
SUPERMAR
followed by
KET
. In addition, a delay is also introduced be-
fore the scrolling message repeats.
The 730 affords several parsing modes that may be selected
from the drop-down menu.
1 - Single
introduces what we call our “safe scrolling” parsing
method.
“Safe Scrolling”
We developed Safe Scrolling over of our concern for distracted
automobile drivers. When viewing a message composed of
complete words or groups of words, a driver must pay close at-
tention to the radio display, or risk missing part of the mes-
sage. Although the message may be repeated over and over,
the driver may tune in at the end of a song, and in trying to
