SHOWER GUARD
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Blom-Singer Shower Guard is designed to shield the tracheostoma when showering and
washing your hair. When properly applied, it will permit you to breathe freely while preventing the
shower spray and water that runs down the neck from entering the tracheostoma. It is supplied
with one Blom-Singer Tracheostoma Valve Housing and 30 Blom-Singer Adhesive Tape Discs. The
device is also compatible with the Blom-Singer StomaSoft Laryngectomy Tube.
INDICATIONS
(Reasons to prescribe the device or procedure)
The device is designed for use by individuals who have a permanent opening in their neck (stoma)
following total laryngectomy (removal of the voice box).
CONTRAINDICATIONS
(Reasons that make it inadvisable to prescribe the device or procedure)
The device is designed only for use in protecting the airway opening (stoma) during showering and
must be properly attached as described below. This device is not designed to protect the airway if
the head and neck are submerged in water. It must not be used in any water sports.
WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS
The device is designed only for single-patient use in protecting the airway opening (tracheostoma)
during showering and must be properly attached as described below. The device is not designed to
protect the airway if the head and neck are submerged in water. The device must not be used in any
water sports. If there are tears, cracks, or structural damage to the device, discontinue use.
COMPLICATIONS
The following complications may occur:
• The penetration of a small amount of shower spray or droplets of water into the airway (stoma)
causing coughing, aspiration, or discomfort.
• Patient infection, airway or lung irritation, or tissue irritation.
• Drowning.
• Temporarily obstructed respiration.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
The device should only be used by individuals who have been trained in its use and care.
Insertion, Removal and Cleaning
Before attaching the Shower Guard, a Blom-Singer tracheostoma housing or Blom-Singer StomaSoft
Laryngectomy tube must first be in place. To place a housing or tube, follow the Instructions for Use
provided with the selected product accessory.
Insertion
With clean hands, insert the Shower Guard partially into the lower rim of the previously applied
tracheostoma housing or tube with the perforated breathing filter facing downward (diagram 1).
Gently push the Shower Guard until it snaps into place. A properly inserted Shower Guard will
fit securely inside the housing or tube. You should be able to breathe without difficulty with the
Shower Guard in place.
Removal
The Shower Guard is designed for removal without also removing the tracheostoma housing or
tube. Use one hand to hold the housing or tube in place. Grasp the Shower Guard by the outer rim
with your other hand and pull to remove.
