CRC is a method of information technology to
determine a test value for data, to detect faults
during the transmission or duplication of data.
Prior to the transmission of a block of data, a
CRC value is calculated. After the end of the
transaction the CRC value is calculated again
at the target location. Then, these two test
values are compared.
Cycle time
This is the time for a cycle. The PLC program
performs one complete run.
Depending on event-controlled branchings in
the program this can take longer or shorter.

Diagnostic coverage is the measure of the
effectiveness of diagnostics as the ratio
between the failure rate of detected dangerous
failures and the failure rate of total dangerous
failures:
Formula: DC = failure rate detected dangerous failures /
total dangerous failures

DC < 60 %

high
99 % < DC
Table: Diagnostic coverage DC
An accuracy of 5 % is assumed for the limit
values shown in the table.
Diagnostic coverage can be determined for the
whole safety-related system or for only parts of
the safety-related system.
