Communication Setup
Before the Protege Reader Expander can communicate with the Protege System Controller the communications
need to be setup. These settings are available from either a web interface or by using a Protege LCD Keypad.
To program the reader expander using the web interface the IP address must be known.

Keypad Programming
To setup the basic communication parameters for the Protege Ethernet Reader Expander using a Protege LCD
Keypad (PRT-KLCD) power the Reader Expander up with DIP Switch 8 turned on as shown below.

DIP Switch Setting for Keypad Configuration
Connect a PRT-KLCD module to the primary RS-485 port (NA and NB) that has a module address of 200 or
greater. Make sure there are no other modules attached to this network, as in this mode the Reader Expander
will simulate a Protege System Controller when in this programming mode.
Once the Keypad has registered with the Reader Expander the following screen will be displayed.
Network Mode
The network mode defines what communication method the Protege Reader Expander will use to communicate
with the Protege System Controller. When Ethernet is selected the primary RS-485 port can be used as a
network repeater and all received Protege communication will be sent to the System Controller of the Ethernet
link.
