Chapter 3. Configuring Your Windows NT Network
This chapter discusses integrating the IBM Network Color Printer into your
Windows NT network environment. Read this chapter if your network uses
an NT server to provide network services to the other workstations, PCs
and Macintoshes on the network.
If your NT server does not provide print services, go straight to
“Configuring the IBM Network Color Printer” on page 6–1 to configure the
printer, and then see the
IBM Network Color Printer: User’s Guide for
instructions on configuring the end-user computers.
System Requirements
This section discusses the requirements that you need to integrate the
IBM Network Color Printer into your Windows NT network environment.
To integrate the printer into a Windows NT network, you must have one of
the following configurations:
• An Ethernet network and a Windows NT server that provides print
services to users of the network. The printer has built-in Ethernet
support, so if this is your network configuration, continue to “Overview of
Windows NT Network Configuration (Ethernet)” on page 3–2.
• A token-ring network and a Windows NT server that provides print
services to users of the network. If this is your network configuration, you
need a mechanism for attaching the printer to your token-ring network
through the printer’s parallel port. There are two methods for
accomplishing this: using a protocol adapter and directly attaching your
server to the parallel port.
Using a Protocol Adapter
Protocol adapters are available from retail sources of PCs and network
equipment. To use a protocol adapter, follow these steps:
1. Attach the protocol adapter to the printer’s parallel port and to your
token-ring network.
Notes:.
1. With this configuration, the Spooler and Downloader utilities
cannot communicate with the printer.
2. Performance using a network protocol adapter may not match
performance using the Ethernet attachment.
2. See “Configuring the IBM Network Color Printer” on page 6–1 and use
the information there to enable the printer parallel port and connect it
to one of the printer’s internal queues. The Print queue is the
recommended choice.
3. Configure the protocol adapter. For instructions, see the
documentation that came with the adapter. After the protocol adapter
is configured and attached, it becomes visible as a token-ring-attached
