Hosts
that
are
attached
to
the
DS6000
series
and
running
the
IBM
Multipath
Subsystem
Device
Driver
(SDD)
should
consider
turning
off
this
automatic
update
feature.
Some
drivers
supplied
by
IBM,
like
SDD,
are
dependent
an
a
specific
kernel,
and
will
cease
to
function
in
the
presence
of
a
new
kernel.
Similarly,
host
bus
adapter
(HBA)
drivers
need
to
be
compiled
against
specific
kernels
to
function
optimally.
By
allowing
automatic
updates
of
the
kernel,
you
risk
impacting
your
host
systems
unexpectedly.
Hardware
requirements
for
the
Linux
operating
system
on
the
pSeries
host
This
section
provides
the
list
of
hardware
that
you
need
to
ensure
that
the
Subsystem
Device
Driver
(SDD)
installs
and
operates
successfully.
You
must
have
the
following
hardware
to
ensure
that
the
Subsystem
Device
Driver
(SDD)
installs
and
operates
successfully:
v
The
storage
unit
device
v
One
or
more
pairs
of
fibre-channel
host
adapters
To
use
the
I/O
load
balancing
and
failover
features
of
SDD,
you
must
have
a
minimum
of
two
paths.
Go
to
http://www.ibm.com/servers/storage/disk/ds6000/interop.html
for
more
information
about
the
fibre-channel
adapters
that
you
can
use
on
your
Linux
host
system.
v
Subsystem
LUNs
that
you
created
and
configured
for
multiport
access.
Each
LUN
can
have
up
to
32
SCSI
disk
instances,
one
for
each
path
on
the
server.
v
A
fibre-optic
cable
to
connect
each
fibre-channel
adapter
to
a
storage
unit
port,
or
to
two
switch
ports
subsequently
zoned
to
storage
unit
ports.
Software
requirement
for
the
Linux
operating
system
on
the
pSeries
host
This
section
provides
the
list
of
software
that
you
need
to
ensure
that
the
Subsystem
Device
Driver
(SDD)
installs
and
operates
successfully.
If
using
SUSE
SLES
8
or
9
or
Red
Hat
Enterprise
Linux
3.0,
you
must
have
Service
Refresh
1
to
ensure
that
SDD
installs
and
operates
successfully.
Unsupported
Environments
SDD
does
not
support
the
following
environments
for
the
Linux
operating
system
on
a
pSeries
host:
v
A
host
system
with
fibre-channel
connection
to
a
shared
storage
unit
LUN
v
Logical
Volume
Manager
v
System
start
from
an
SDD
pseudo
device
v
EXT3
filesystem
on
an
SDD
pseudo
device
v
System
paging
file
on
an
SDD
pseudo
device
v
Single-path
mode
during
concurrent
download
and
installation
of
LMC
v
Single-path
mode
during
any
maintenance
that
impacts
the
path
attachment,
such
as
replacing
a
storage
unit
host
adapter
