1. Turn off the computer and attached devices; then, disconnect all power cords
and external cables.
Note: The AGP Pro slot and PCI slot 1 must be empty for you to install an
optional IEEE 1394 (FireWire) adapter in the mini-PCI Type III slot.
Install the optional IEEE 1394 (FireWire) adapter before installing an
optional PCI adapter; the AGP video adapter will also need to be
temporarily removed.
2. Remove the cover, support bracket and baffle (see“Removing the side cover”
on page 39 and “Removing and installing the support bracket” on page 42).
3. Temporarily remove any adapters installed in the AGP Pro slot and PCI slot 1
(see “Installing an adapter” on page 45). Temporarily store these adapters in a
static-protective location.
4. Locate the mini-PCI slot on the system board (see “System-board option
connectors” on page 36). Check the instructions that come with the adapter for
any requirements, restrictions, or cabling instructions. It might be easier to
route any cables before you install the adapter.
5. Set any jumpers or switches on the adapter or system board according to the
documentation that comes with the adapter.
6. Press each of the two plastic stand-offs that come with the IEEE 1394
(FireWire) option kit into the holes provided for them on the system board,
making sure that they snap into place firmly.
7. Remove the adapter from the static-protective package. Move the adapter
directly from the static-protective package to the adapter slot. Avoid touching
the components and gold-edge connectors on the adapter.
8. Turn the adapter so that the adapter keys align correctly with the mini-PCI type
III connector (PCI2) on the system board.
Attention: To avoid breaking the retaining clips or damaging the connectors,
handle the clips gently.
9. Insert the adapter into the connector at a slight angle and then press it toward
the system board, allowing the two plastic stand-offs from step 6 to snap into
place in the holes provided for them on the IEEE 1394 (FireWire) card. The
two retaining clips must snap into the closed position.
