information that comes with the software for a description of the messages and
solutions to the problem.

Power checkout
Power problems can be difficult to troubleshoot. For instance, a short circuit can
exist anywhere on any of the power distribution busses. Usually a short circuit will
cause the power subsystem to shut down because of an overcurrent condition.
A general procedure for troubleshooting power problems is as follows:
1. Power off the system and disconnect the ac cord(s).
2. Check for loose cables in the power subsystem. Also check for short circuits, for
instance if there is a loose screw causing a short circuit on a circuit board.
3. Remove adapters and disconnect the cables and power connectors to all
internal and external devices until system is at minimum configuration required
to turn on the system (see
″
Minimum operating requirements
″
on page 106).
4. Reconnect the ac cord and power on the system. If the system turns on
successfully, replace adapters and devices one at a time until the problem is
isolated. If system does not power on from minimal configuration, replace FRUs
of the minimum configuration one at a time until the problem is isolated.
To use this method it is important to know the minimum configuration required for a
system to turn on (see page 106).
Recovering your operating system and preinstalled software
This section contains instructions for recovering BIOS code, device drivers, the
operating system, and other support software.
Recovering the operating system
The computer has the Product Recovery program on a hidden partition of the hard
disk drive. The Product Recovery program reinstalls your operating system and
preinstalled software. The Product Recovery program runs independently of the
operating system.
If you are using FDISK, Disk Management, or another utility to reformat the hard
disk, you might see the partition where the Product Recovery program is stored. Do
not delete this partition or the Product Recovery program will be lost.
If your hard disk drive, including the partition where the Product Recovery program
resides, becomes damaged or you replace the hard disk drive, you can use the IBM
Product Recovery CD (see “Recovery CD (Windows XP)” on page 112) to recover
the preinstalled operating system, application programs, and device drivers.
Attention: The Product Recovery program will erase all files on drive C only. A full
recovery will restore the operating system, device drivers, and all original
applications that came with the computer from IBM.
Complete the following steps to recover the operating system.
