Setting Up a Netw ork Serv er to Update HP-UX
Applications
Use this section to set up y our w orkstation as a serv er to up date HP-UX
applications o v er the net w ork.
Ov erview of the netdist Program
Setting up a net w ork serv er to distribute up date softw are is particularly useful
if y ou ha v e a large groups of net w ork ed systems that m ust b e up dated to a new
application.
Y ou can set up a net w ork distribution ( netdist ) serv er on y our net w ork to
distribute applications o v er the net w ork. Other systems on the net w ork can
then run the standard /etc/update program, sp ecifying the netdist serv er as
their up date source instead of tap es.
T o set up a netdist serv er, y ou run the updist program (a v ariant of update )
on the serv er. The updist program transfers les from the up date tap es to the
serv er disk.
Y ou then start the netdistd daemon running on the serv er enabling other
systems to dra w lesets from a serv er distribution directory (typically called
/netdist.700 if y ou are distributing Series 700 softw are). This directory is
set up when y ou run the updist program. The netdistd daemon deliv ers
the lesets from this distribution directory o v er the net w ork to the requesting
system.
Note that up dating from a netdist serv er do es not require a D A T driv e on the
system to b e up dated.
