The c ommand name is the name of an HP-UX command. The ar gument is the
data that the command will act up on. There may b e more than one ar gument .
In the follo wing examples, all of the ar guments are le names.
About Directories
Y ou will understand the following examples b etter if y ou kno w something
ab out directories. In HP-UX, a le is a \con tainer" for data. A directory is
a \con tainer," to o, but it con tains les. A directory may also con tain other
directories.
A le's lo cation may b e describ ed b y writing the \c hain" of directories one
m ust pass through to nd the le. In HP-UX, the highest-level directory is
called the ro ot directory . It is designated b y the \slash" sym b ol:

A directory called users that is con tained in the ro ot directory is designated in
this w a y:
/users
The directory users is said to b e a sub directory of the ro ot directory . It may
in turn con tain other sub directories. Here is ho w a users sub directory called
terry is designated:
/users/terry
