Maintenance work on engines must be carried out only by
experienced mechanics. Always wear personal protective equipment.

ATTENTION:
Use the injection pump timing hole to
help find the flywheel position for inser-
ting the locking pins.
• To insert Locking Pin 3488-6 or 3488-7,
remove the crankshaft position sensor.
• Position the flywheel by turning the
crankshaft
clockwise
until the timing hole
in the injection pump sprocket is positioned
at a point
just before
it is fully aligned.
• Insert the Locking Pin 3488-6 or 3488-7
through the sensor holder so it rests on the
flywheel ring.
• Apply slight pressure to the end of the pin
and turn the crankshaft slowly until the pin
engages the slot in the flywheel ring.
• The crankshaft is now at 50° BTDC.
ATTENTION:
Do not use the locking pins
to counter-hold when releasing or
tightening screwed connections.
Do not turn the engine with the
Flywheel Locking Pin fitted.

Camshaft and Injection Pump
Locking Pins 3488-8
• 3 x identical locking pins, 1 for each of the
camshafts and 1 for the injection pump
timing.
• Locking Pins 3488-8 are designed to allow
removal of the sprockets without removing
the inserted pins.
Do not remove the pins from their
timing holes!

Chain Tensioner Locking Pin 3488-9
• To remove the timing chain, the chain ten-
sioner must be ‘locked back’ and removed.
• Release
(A)
and simultaneously push back
(B)
and insert the Chain Tensioner Locking
Pin 3488-9 through the hole
(C)
to lock back
chain tensioner (see figure 13).
• When re-assembling the sprockets, chain
and front end, ensure that the 3 copper links
on the timing chain align with the timing
marks on all three sprockets, and the chain
is taut on the non-tensioned side.
•
Loosely
tighten the camshaft and injection
pump sprocket bolts, re-fit guides and ten-
sioner and withdraw the Chain Tensioner
Locking 3488-9 from tensioner .
• Fully tighten all sprocket bolts (according to
car manufacturer’s specifications) and then
remove the 3 locking pins.
ATTENTION:
Carry out timing check!
• To ensure engine timing is correct, turn the
engine over, by hand,
two revolutions
in
normal direction of rotation, until the
Locking Pin 3488-6 or -7 fits into the
flywheel.
• Check that the 3 x Locking Pins 3488-8 can
be inserted into the camshafts and injection
pump timing holes.

Camshaft Setting Plate 3488-1
• The Camshaft Setting Plate 3488-1 is used
to lock the camshafts in the correct timing
position via a datum slot at the rear of both
camshafts.
ATTENTION:
When replacing the timing belt, the
camshaft sprocket bolts should be
released to allow the sprockets to be
‘free to turn’ on the camshafts.
Timing tools and locking pins must not be
used for counter-holding!
