•
Do not mount a smoke alarm on the ceiling of a trailer
or similar areas. In such areas, sunlight heats the air
quickly, which can prevent any smoke from penetrating
and triggering the smoke alarm.
•
Do not mount the smoke alarm on the wall.
4.3.2 Installation locations with limitations
•
Also bear in mind the information in
4.2 Reasons for
false alarms
.
•
Smoke alarms should only be installed in kitchens and
damp rooms (bathroom) if the restrictions are observed
and false alarms caused by steam can be prevented.
•
When installing the smoke alarm near to dishwashers,
washing machines, ovens, etc., keep a distance of at
least 3 m from these areas.
•
When installing the smoke alarm near to ventilation ducts
and shafts or openings for heating and cooling supply,
keep a distance of at least 1 m from these areas. The
air could blow the smoke away from the smoke alarm,
thereby interrupting or preventing the alarm. Make sure
that the air circulation in such rooms does not interfere
with the entry of fire smoke into the smoke alarm.
•
Perforated ceilings that are used for ventilation in rooms
with forced ventilation must be closed within a radius of
0.5 m around the smoke alarm.
•
In very dirty, dusty or greasy areas, or areas infested with
insects, smoke alarms can become contaminated with
dust and dirt to the extent that false alarms can occur or
smoke detection can be impaired.
4.3.3 Standard rooms
•
Smoke and combustion by-products rise upward to ceil-
ings before spreading horizontally. The ideal installation
location is on the ceiling in the middle of a room.
•
Make sure that the smoke alarm is installed at least
0.5 m from each side wall and larger fixtures such as
high cupboards (see Figure 2a).
•
A single smoke alarm is only permitted for rooms of up to 60
m
2
. If the room is larger than 60 m
2
, use additional smoke
alarms. In rooms with a size between 60 m² and 120 m², for
example, you should install at least two smoke alarms.
•
A single smoke alarm is only permitted for installation
at heights of up to 6 m. If the ceiling is higher than 6 m,
use additional smoke alarms at different heights.

Additional installation regulations may apply for rooms
with particular geometries (raised horizontal surface,
slanted ceilings, corner room, etc.). Therefore, make sure
you observe the following chapters.
4.3.4 Hallways, small rooms and corner rooms
Hallways and rooms with a width ≤ 1 m:
The ideal installation location is on the ceiling midway
between the walls.
Hallways with a width ≤ 3 m:
•
In hallways with a maximum width of 3 m, the maximum
permitted distance between two smoke alarms is 15 m.
•
The distance of the smoke alarm from the front end of
the hallway must not be greater than 7.5 m.
•
Note that in corner and intersection areas, the smoke
alarm should be installed in the mitre line.
