ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
TEMPERATURE EFFECT
An increase in the temperature of the gas through which the sound pulse travels will lower
its density and therefore the rate at which the pulse travels through the gas. The overall
effect is in the range of 3% / 20
o
C. Distance is therefore slightly overestimated if there is an
increase in temperature.
ALTITUDE EFFECT
The effect of altitude is significant on the density of a gas and therefore on the speed of
sound, for example, at an altitude of 1km, distance is overestimated by 7%.
