spark p l ug is a medium-to- l ight tan
( the idea l c o l or when the vehi cl e is
ridden norma ll y ) .
NO T E:
I f the spark p l ug shows a distin c t l y dif-
ferent c o l or, the engine c ou l d be oper-
ating improper l y. Do not attempt to di-
agnose su c h prob l ems yourse l f. I n-
stead, have a E xp l orer dea l er c he c k the
vehi cl e.
2 . C he c k the spark p l ug for e l e c trode
erosion and ex c essive c arbon or
other deposits, and rep l a c e it if
ne c essary.

T o insta ll the spark p l ug
1 . M easure the spark p l ug gap with a
wire thi c kness gauge and, if ne c -
essary, ad j ust the gap to spe c ifi-
c ation.

Spark p l ug gap:
0. 6 ~ 0. 7 mm
2 . Cl ean the surfa c e of the spark p l ug
gasket and its mating surfa c e, and
then wipe o ff any grime from the
spark p l ug threads.
3 . I nsta ll the spark p l ug with the spark
p l ug wren c h, and then tighten it to
the spe c ified tor q ue.
T ightening tor q ue:

NO T E:
I f a tor q ue wren c h is not avai l ab l e when
insta ll ing a spark p l ug, a good estimate
of the c orre c t tor q ue is 1/4 ~ 1/2 turn
past finger tight. H owever, the spark
p l ug shou l d be tightened to the spe c i-
fied tor q ue as soon as possib l e.
