Contraindications,Precautions, and Warnings
Warnings
1. Ensure that the area on the patient’s skin where the electrodes are
to be placed is clean and free of all foreign matter. This includes
powders, perfumes (and like substances) as well as body oils, dirt, and
grime. Clean the area with an alcohol wipe. Allow the alcohol to fully
evaporate before applying the electrodes. Iontophoresis can drive
any of the above contaminants below the epidural layer where an
allergic reaction may occur.
2. Remove all electrodes and electrode cables from the patient before
using other medical, industrial, or scientific equipment.
3. Current levels should not exceed patient comfort. The patient should
be encouraged to report any undue pain or burning during treatment.
4.
Iontophoresis can cause inflammation and irritation to the skin,
including skin burns. If these conditions occur, stop the treatment and
consult the prescribing physician.
5. Use extreme caution when administering a treatment where sensory
nerve damage is present or in any case where there is a loss of normal
skin sensation; this includes areas desensitized by medication.
WARNING
A transient skin reaction can sometimes occur directly under an electrode.
This reaction is identified by a uniform red pattern and will usually
disappear within 12 hours of treatment.
6. Patients with known skin sensitivities or allergies may be treated with
lower current settings and longer treatment times; however, caution
should be used.
7. Patients may show sensitivity or an allergic reaction to the adhesive
backing used on some Iontophoresis electrodes. If these conditions
present themselves, hypo-allergenic electrodes are recommended.
8. An electrode which is suspect should be discarded.
9. This device should not be used in the following conditions or over the
following areas:
• Transcranial
• Acute and sub-acute Thrombophlebitis
• Over a carotid sinus
• Any lesions
• Eyes
• Ears
• Heart
• Post surgical sites
10. Electrode pads used with this device are intended for one-time use
and should be discarded after use into an approved biological waste
container.
