Pier / Wharf
Deployment of the Diver6 System from a pier / wharf is straightforward and common practice for first
responders (e.g. Police, Fire, Search and Rescue).
The Topside Modem placement off a pier needs careful consideration. The Topside Modem needs to be
clear of obstructions so as not to cause an acoustic shadow between the diver and the Topside Modem
(Figure 15).
1.
Place the Topside Modem clear of hard walls. Some piers have a concrete structure that has a vertical
face well below water level and the Topside Modem needs to be placed either below the bottom of
this by about 300 mm (1 foot) or 1.0 m (3 feet) clear of the wall.
2.
Place the Topside Modem clear of piles. The best position is midway between piles. In most
conditions the Topside Modem can see around piles but placing it in a location where it has an
unobstructed view of the diver will produce the best results.
3.
Use a rigid mount to secure the Topside Modem to the pier or wharf. This will reduce the amount of
swing that the transducer has and therefore increase the accuracy of the tracking.
