Akagi: Step by Step

Drawing the waterline: Steps 13-14
Painting the hull: Steps 15-17
Assembling the dive bomber: Steps 18-25
Position the hull, as
shown, on a flat surface.
Turn the jig assembly
on its side and draw a
line around the hull.
Apply masking tape to
the hull, aligning the
bottom edge of the tape
with the mark made in
the previous step. At the
bow and stern, angle
the masking tape up
1 mm above the line
(see inset), using the
blue dotted lines in
the photos as the
points to change the
angle of the tape.
Tape paper over the hangar
assembly and the part of the hull
above the masking tape
attached in the last step. Turn
upside down and hand paint the
propeller parts with a suitable
red paint, such as “hull red.”
Use wet and dry paper
to remove any burrs in
the circled area, and
check the opposite side
as well. Glue the wings
to the fuselage.
Spray the elevator floor with gray paint.
Now, spray all of the bottom of the hull with red paint. It is best to
apply a few coats, letting each one dry before applying another.
When the last coat is dry, remove the paper covering the upper
side of the hull, but not the paper covering the hangar.
