The mechanism also consists of the front and rear drive plates, and five drive
pegs. In addition to the rotary drive parts are the five lead screw assemblies
that pull the cassette out of the drum as the unit rotates.
All the above assemblies are mounted on a central shaft that fits between the
chassis back-plate and pedestal. Clearance distances on these items are very
important, hence any damage to these parts generally demands complete
replacement of the damaged parts.
The mechanism includes a slip-ring assembly for transferring the power and
data from the pod cabling on the stationary side of the system, to the cone in
the rotating part of the system. This slip ring is oil filled and pressure
compensated with its own compensation unit, all connected together by a
length of hydraulic hose. This unit is sealed by the manufacturers and should
not be tampered with.
Maintenance
When the unit is returned to the deck after use, the five lead screw drive
pinions and the lead screws should be washed down with clean water to
remove any sediment or debris lodged inside the teeth of the gears/threads. A
general inspection and check should be made regularly to ensure that all the
fastenings are present and tight.
It is very important to ensure that the drive pegs and lead screws are clean
and well lubricated prior to use. There are grease points fitted to both ends of
the drive pegs and the lead screws that can be used during long-term services
for greasing the bushes. The quantity of grease required in each bush is very
small due to a very limited grease cavity in the ends of the shafts. There are
also grease points in the nuts and sliders, but again these require very little
grease.
